Uinfied ODBC is NOT ODBC :) it's just a set of <database>_function calls which happen to work similarly in a few databases, so they were put under the "Unified" stuff. I believe this is a misnomer though, since Unified ODBC doesn't use the ODBC API. You can use any real ODBC package to connect to any databases, as long as you can obtain an ODBC driver for that database. You also need a driver manager. The driver manager (one example is iODBC) needs to be compiled into PHP (http://www.iodbc.org/odbc-phpHOWTO.html) An odbc.ini file will hold all the connection parameters that the driver manager will pass to the driver, and initiate connection. The iODBC driver manager is free/open source, to allow the equivalent of the Windows ODBC Administrator on non-Win32 platforms. Drivers are often commercial, especially on non-Win32 platforms. If you compile PHP --with-openlink, you get both the iODBC driver manager and the commercial driver support, or you can use --with-iodbc and use other vendors' ODBC drivers for your database. Hope this helps!
