Look in the Pear directory of the PHP tarball. Here you'll find an db
abstraction layer similar to DBI.

Subject: [PHP] Database abstraction
I'm trying to build a web application that will access a Sybase
database. However, there is the possibility that it will need to
instead access an Oracle database in the future. Does Php have a
database abstraction layer? Does Php have something similar to Perl's
DBI? Has anyone used Metabase?
