Apache2 support in PHP is simply nowhere near mature yet. Especially in
version 4.2.2 that you are using. In the upcoming 4.3.2 we switched away
from the Apache2 filter module version of PHP, which was broken in a
number of ways to a new Apache2 Handler module which we hope will do a
better job, but that remains to be seen.
If you want a working Apache+PHP server at this point, stick to Apache
1.3.x, at least on UNIX systems. On Windows things are a bit better, but
that is mostly because Apache1 for Windows really isn't very good.
