If I had to take a guess at what was causing this, I would say that garbage collection was occurring at random times, but on searching for more info on this with PHP, I couldn't find anything conclusive.
Just a guess, because you mentioned garbage collection, PHP does garbage collect session files. Are you using sessions? If so *maybe* (though I doubt it) look into the session garbage collecting settings in php.ini. Also, is it possible that those really slow pages are being accessed by someone with a really slow connection, maybe a 33k modem? Someone using a 33K modem would be a rarity an might explain why you see this problem very infrequently. Other than that how about upgrading apache and PHP? You're at least three apache versions behind and PHP is now up to 4.3.1 If you do find out what the problem is I would be happy to learn about what caused it. Jean-Christian Imbeault
