Having management make decisions like this, without much research, is, unfortunately, a fact of life. I'm sure this person probably shopped around for a mortgage, compared features/benefits when looking at items to purchase, but 'only knows' java, so that's what everyone has to use. My guess here is that this individual will probably do very little coding as well, leaving most of it to you and the others in the trenches. Sorry to hear that... :( Yes, I know many purchases are not analytical but emotional - however, the larger the ticket item - I'm thinking mortgage-level here - the less people are inclined to just 'do it' because of the long-term ramifications. The same idea should apply here. *Arbitrarily* deciding to move to Java (or ASP, or Perl, or PHP, or CF, or whatever) is a bad move, period. Arbitrarily making *any* decision with that much imapct is bad. Having said that, java has some strengths too, but for rapid *web* development, PHP is still a tough cookie to beat. Joseph, I think I had it backwards some - the is a 'servlet' directory under the SAPI area in the source code - apparently you can build PHP4 to be run as a servlet, so it could be called from your Java system. The README says they've tested it with Tomcat already. Is there any reason why you can't use both at your place? Use PHP for what it's better at (taking into account that you've got people who already know it) but start testing the waters with some less critical apps in Java. See what works best for your company. If your management has been reading about how 'great' java is, it's probably NOT coming from an MS magazine - it's Java-friendly sources. No great shakes, but they need to realize what they're reading. Java-shops will sing the praises of Java, ASP-shops will sing MS praises, etc. Unfortunately, there's not a high-profile way of singing PHP praises (yet?). Have him interview real-world shops using Java, and see what dev time is for them (and maintenance time). See how it compares to what you're achieving already. Rant rant rant... :) Hope this helps some.
