That depends on what you're trying to do. Are you trying to upgrade you php setup via Yellow Dog's rpms, or build php from scratch on a Yellow Dog system.
I'm trying to build/install PHP 4.0.2 which is newer than the YDL installed version which doesn't support mySQL (so I've heard). I've just spent a few days configuring mySQL, and I'm very relieved to have finally gotten it working. Apache is already working fine (and so is php 3) on this server, and I'm very paranoid about munging something that I can't fix. :-) It seems many users are installing Apache in /usr/local/ which seems like a good idea. Being a clueless newbie however, I'm not sure where Apache is installed on the system currently, and which parts I might have to edit/remove/ in order to reinstall it successfully. I used find / -name apachectl and didn't turn up anything. From what I gather, Apache is composed of several components, but it's unclear to me what they are and where they are kept. In any case, it doesn't seem to be in /usr/local/. Your installation method seems pretty clear (thanks for taking the time to post it!) but I still have a couple of questions. I'll try to be very specific: 1) Since your recommended installation of Apache puts it in /usr/local/apache/ what do I have to remove (and from where) to start with a clean slate? I'm using a fairly standard Champion Server 1.2 configuration. 2) Can I install PHP 4 as an Apache module *without* reinstalling Apache, and leave it wherever it is? Since it's already working and doesn't technically need to be upgraded this would seem preferable. (once again, paranoia rears its head...) Thanks again for your help! I'm slowly scaling the Linux learning curve and I appreciate your taking the time to post the details. Best regards, Gawain Reifsnyder Guitar.net, Inc. http://guitar.net
