sendmail does a reverse DNS lookup on every IP on its server
to ensure the sender is authorized. IF your reverse DNS is not
set up and/or the server is stuck or running slowly the process
will get hung up until each request times out. I have experienced
this on my system.
do an nslookup on your domain's IP address and see how long it
takes. Then do sendmail -d0-99.99 (insert the rest of your command here)
which puts sendmail in debug mode. It will print a copious list
of messages, and probably get stuck when it's doing its dns
lookups.
If it's not set up then have your ISP fix it for you.
Hope this helps.
