Mark & all,
If you can't find the httpd.conf file for your ISP, here's a quick way to
check the settings:
make a file called info.php with the single line:
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
Now call it up on your browser. If PHP4 is running, you should get the
info, and it'll say "PHP 4.0.x" (x is some number) on top.
Now change the filename to info.php3, and see what happens. If it gives
you a version 3.something, and you want to use PHP4, you'll have to do it
manually. Put this in your .htaccess file in the highest web directory:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php3
IF you haven't upgraded yet and you want to get ready, you can put this in
your .htaccess:
AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php
This way you can anticipate the filename convention and run .php files
with php3 until you upgrade. This is also a good solution for people who
must run php3 and envy the much-cooler (IMHO) .php extension that the php4
guys get to use. :-)
htaccess files are GREAT! I'm glad I figured this out before I tried to
s/php3/php/g on all files _and_ their names!
