sum column

I am trying to sum a column. It should be really easy but Instead of a
number being returned I am getting "Resource id #4" and before that I was
getting Resource id # 3. What do these errors mean and wtf am I doing wrong.
Sorry if this is a way newbie question but I have been trying to get this
right on my own to no avail.
