Hello Andrew, You might want to take a look a phpBB ( www.phpbb.com ). Release 1.0 is just getting ready to come out but there is a flurry of activity going on. I got involved with it a couple of months ago and I must say it is some very well written code. Modifying has been no problem. It is an open source project (hosted at sourceforge.org). The default backend is PHP, apache and MySql.
