FreeBSD (Walnut Creek CDROM) and BSDI (BSD INC.) merged lately and the company is now named BSD Inc. By the next major version (5.0) both systems will be merged and the system will inherit name 'FreeBSD'. It will remain open source (BSD license), and BSD Inc. will sell it on CDs, offer commercial support and other stuff, just like Linux distributors do. I have had absolutely no problems with Apache, PHP and MySQL on FreeBSD, have been used this combination for 2 years, it compiles and works perfectly. I don't see any troubles with dynamic pages too, since your configuration could do a lot. As of scalability, FreeBSD is the primary OS on Yahoo! and MS Hotmail servers. After all, I would recommend you to use the platform you got used to. If you can cope with Solaris well, use it. It's great indeed (but very complicated compared to FreeBSD or even Linux). If you did not used *NIX before, try FreeBSD - it's easier to understand than (even :) ) Linux (IMHO), very stable, secure and fast (don't blame me, linux users :) ). And, of course, if you got used to Linux, use Linux :). I would not recommend you using Windows NT or W2k with Apache and MySQL, I heard a lot that they're buggy on Windows (maybe this is wrong). -- Best regards, Max A.
