In xhtml

is quite correct.
is an acceptable short notation. For any empty element you have to write an opening and closing tag and these tags can be shortened. So
is perfectly valid xhtml.Incidentally, "
" is an error for html.Really -- why don't you tell the w3c about that? http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_br.asp
OR maybe tell me why my site passes w3c HTML validation: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://sperling.com/examples/captcha/ If it's an error, they didn't catch it. You are quite correct here though.
does not seem to be considered an error by the validator.Lori
