Not really, for Apache at least you select the file extensions that
will be run by php with:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .whateveryouwant
Only extensions listed in your apache configuration will work. You
don't have to include the standard ones, and you can easily make up
your own.
I suspect other web servers are similar, but Apache is the only one I
know.
