That is true,
PHP has only (18?) ever published books related to it's codes. but I don't
think that any of them can be described as a manual.
www.PHP.net / www.Zend.com are MUCH better updated that the books about PHP.
What I read is what can teach me a better style of programming. A good book
for this is "Professional PHP Programming". But once again, it won't really
be for you a code reference, it will noticeably help your programming
background (your base) using your favorite language (PHP, right?) as the
tool on what we learn it on.
Cheers,
Maxim Maletsky.

I would like to recommend "the PHP manual" as the best piece of
published learning material there is for PHP.
http://php.net/manual
If it is a paper book you are needing, it is also provided in PDF
format for printing.

I am pleased to see that we have differences. May we together become
greater than the sum of both of us.
