Hi Jason, I can offer my opinon on 4 PHP books i have reead or used as reference. Professional PHP Programming - from Wrox publishing Good solid reference although the manual has more detail in most respetcs but it has served me well in general. Core PHP Programming - Prentice Hall This book is PHP3 and a reahash of the manual at the time, yet it has some good eamples and has been a good reference. PHP Essentials - by Julie Meloni - Excellent beginners Book. A co-worker with no PHP knowldge quickly picked up the basic concepts and built a clever application in a matter of a in a mater of about 20 hours which he uses commercially on his own site. Web Application Development in PHP 4.0 - New Riders This book is excellent for more advanced concepts of PHP although its not a large book it deals more with how to build web application in PHP4 and also has a reference ont he Zend API and some examples of very large scale sites using PHP4. Having been a PHP developer for about a year or so this book is helping me build better more resuable code and making a cleaner more dcisplined decisiosn on how i design the arichitecture of my applications. The manual is still the best reecource but as far as concepts go i favour the last book above, I have also heard the PHP4 Bible is good its on my wich list. :) Cheers Steven ******************************* Steven Michael Holloway Web Programmer Port Douglas Internet Services Cairns Australia steven@pdis.com.au ******************************* -----Original Message----- From: Jason Murray [mailto:Jason.Murray@melbourneit.com.au] Sent: Monday, November 20, 2000 11:59 AM To: 'php-general@lists.php.net' Subject: [PHP] Recommended PHP Books? Hi folks, We're looking for recommended PHP books to buy for the web development team here - since I'm the only one who 'knows' PHP (and even I could do with a few new tricks), we need a good range from beginner to advanced. So, I thought I'd ask people which books they recommend. I fully realise that many of the best resources are websites and forums, but when you have a group of people who want to learn it's important to give them some kind of tangible reference as well. So please, fire away with some suggestions (and if you could also explain why you prefer them, it'd be cool).
