FrontPage doesn't know to leave code in <? ?> or <?php ?> alone. If the version of PHP you are using supports the ASP tags option (<% %>), that would work, or there is another option I just thought of:
[html code here]
<!--
<? (or <?php
echo "--".">\n";
[php code here]
echo "<"."!--\n";
?>
-->
[more html]
so that FrontPage would think the PHP code is actually just an HTML comment, but since the closing comment tag is being sent out (concatenated in the middle so FrontPage doesn't read it as a closing comment tag), the browser will just see a opening and closing tag so it will have no effect, and FrontPage will ignore that part of the code.
