PHP is easily robust enough. anyone who has built anything with java knows all too well about nullpointer exception hell. no thanks. I recently had an app built (in php) which encrypts all database traffic on the fly, and I have to say it would have been a bummer using another language. When you pair PHP with linux, it's a powerhouse. Obviously, you can screw it up, but that has nothing to do with PHP :) I've got a permissions system that is the most paranoid beauty I've come across, I've tried everything to get through it, and nothing has worked (to my great satisfaction :) - so PHP is certainly capable of playing with the big boys in terms of security. ... connection pooling: metebase (which we use in binarycloud) doesn't do connection pooling, which is a bummer. but so far we've had extremely good performance out of oracle8i, and I expect that only to increase with 9i's cluster abilities. also, with java, there isn't really an opensource spirit. how much free, powerful code have you seen for writing big applications have you seen? especially as compared to php? not applets :) anyway, all of my experiences with java have been a nightmare, I'd sooner use ASP (*cough*) or even CFML (*hack*) than java. also, XML-RPC/php! 'nuff said. I might get a few flames on this, but I don't think mySQL is ready for that kind of prime time. Read Tim Perdue's stuff on PHPBuilder. It's cool for smaller apps (we use it for development in house), but if you think you're going to get a lot of data flow, use oracle. yes, I hate oracle (the company) also, but they do have the best database engine out there, hands down, no question about it. it works. really well. on linux. you could use postgres, I haven't ever used it so I don't know. Tim perdue seems to like it, which is a good sign, but I've heard it can be fussy. it's all about the system design. do that wrong, and you're toast. anyway: I've got a serious set of open source code that's about to go out - for building big apps just like that - if you get the job, let me know and I'll get you a copy. _a -- Alex Black, Head Monkey enigma@turingstudio.com The Turing Studio, Inc. http://www.turingstudio.com vox+510.666.0074 fax+510.666.0093 Saul Zaentz Film Center 2600 Tenth St Suite 433 Berkeley, CA 94710-2522 > From: ben_heuer@artlover.com ("Ben Heuer") > Newsgroups: php.general > Date: 16 Oct 2000 02:13:12 -0700 > Subject: [PHP] Is PHP serious enough for Online Trading app? > > Hi, > > I love PHP and am nearly a PHP-evangelist and all, but a question was posted > to me at work this evening: "Sure, PHP rocks, but is it serious enough to > develop an online trading platform with?" > > My off-the-bat answer was a resounding yes, and that its HOW you develop > your architecture, not WHAT language you use that matters.
