Thanks a lot, Dezider.
I will definitelly ask you first whenever I will need a help on convertion.
The fact is that I don't know ASP at all, but I am more then just fluent in
PHP.
once again, PHP, so far, is still the only language I know. (talking about
these which plays with databases.)
What do you think of asp2php ? can that be start?
my concern is that we will lose too much efforts converting it and then our
investment will not be that sweet.
Thanks again, Dezider,
Maxim Maletsky

Well, it ca't be THAT bad....
Right now I'm doing the same thing - converting ASP code to PHP. I can say,
I
might be lucky, 'cause I wrote the original ASP code, so I know what it
does.
But AFAI can say, it's piece of cake. PHP _is_ extremly flexible language
and
from my point of view it's even easier to learn than ASP.
I have programmed several years in Visual FoxPro, so I know MSSQL pretty
well,
and I wasn't lasy to write the pure ASP code - I didn't use DTC (Design Time
Controls) in ASP, so my ASP code is clear and readable.
I also decided to transfer my MS-SQL database to MySQL, even I miss
triggers,
relationships in MySQL, but when you know SQL, you can bussiness classes to
take
care of it. I separated the logic into layers:
1, Database layer - MySQL database which holds the data
2, Business logic - PHP classes that substitute MS-SQL stored procedures,
triggers, etc.
3, Front-end layer - PHP pages, that show the result and interact with user.
Maybe it's my VFP habbit of using three-tier architecture and object
oriented
programming, but I find it extremly usefull and easy to understand.
And what I can say, php's support for sql servers is absolutly wonderfull. I
don't have to mess up with connection objects, recordsets, command, and
stuff
like that as in ASP. It's just ten times easier for me.
Just connect to the server, select the right database, and execute the
query,
and you got what you want.
My php code is about half of original asp.
So Maxim, if you need some help, drop me a mail and if I able to help, I'd
like
to.
hth,
Dezider.
