PHP is free. ASP is part of IIS which I think you pay for ????
PHP will run on both Unix and Windows NT
PHP has similar syntax to C, Perl and JavaScript, good for standards. ASP is
based on BASIC, bad for standards.
Loads of full working Open Source samples on the web for PHP.
ASP talks the COM objects language, PHP4 with Zend (I believe) has some COM
capabilities, if not all.
PHP has native functions for communicating with MySQL and MSSQL. ASP must
use ODBC, bad for performance.
ASP has a higher number of users. Not necessarily a good thing but I think
people are afraid of using PHP because they don't understand it.
The list goes on.............
I have tried to be un-biased, and I used Microsoft products for many years
until I discovered the alternatives. If you want low cost, high performance
leading edge technology, use PHP. If you want expensive and alleged tried
and tested technologies that suffer with reliability and performance issues
use ASP.
The message I keep getting is that if you don't follow the Microsoft crowd
you are considered a bit of a Black Sheep. This doesn't bother the hard core
developers that want reliability and performance, but management want you to
use products that they know about and are afraid to put there name to
technologies that they simply don't understand.
At the end of the day it depends on what you want to do with a scripting
language, if you want portability and performance use PHP. If you want to be
safe use ASP, wear a scarf when it's cold and always brush your teeth after
meals.
Hope this helps
Andy.
