Wild guess:
have you turned on safe mode and configured a safe exec dir? Maybe it cannot
see the binary (no other binaries but those from the safe exec dir).
mail() does a popen() to sendmail, so try to do that by yourself with PHP land
functions and maybe you'll sort it out.
