Try to look on netcraft.com, though I don't know if it sorts by numbers.
One thing for you to consider is that a single non-upgraded shared
server (like those web hosts for 20$ a month) are having a hell bunch of
sites and every and each of their users are
1. usually with few money to invest in development,
2. have PHP3 installed by their hosts (hopefully not in a safe mode and
with some db usage allowed) and are in need of finding good and solid
Open Source php software for their business need.
Yup, that still happens often.

Subject: [PHP] PHP3 vs PHP4 -- anybody know the numbers?
I'm preparing a script to release on some of the script directories and
had a quick question about PHP3 and PHP4 usage. Does anyone know
roughly how many more people are still using PHP3 or have switched to
PHP4. What I've done since I'm using objects and also PHP3 is to
explicity set class names since commands like get_class() isn't
available in PHP4, plus a few other things that I've had to hard code to
get around some things that PHP4 has that I wanted in my PHP3 code.
The reason I wanted to know was, should I in the code I release, keep it
in PHP3 functionality or switch it up to PHP4-only routines? In other
words, are there enough people besides myself using PHP3 to both making
it PHP3 compatible? Any advice?
Thanks
Joel
