Linux/Apache is the best bet.
You might gain a few cycles from fancier hardware -- But Linux/Apache is by
far the most used and therefore tested and therefore stable.
Is it worth risking meltdown for a 5% performance gain?
Solve performance with good design and clustering.

I had already tried both ways, without success. I have found a lot of
places with benchmarks of PHP accessing different databases on the same
server/os pair, (PHP + Oracle = X queries/second, PHP + MySQL = Y
queries/sec, etc...), but that's not what I was looking for.
Maybe I shoud have phrased the original question like this:
1) assume you prepare one, heavy, HTML/PHP page (any combination of
includes, SQL stuff, math calculation, on the fly graphics,
whatever).
2) Install it on as many as possible OS/WWW server combinations,
**always on the same hardware and PHP version**
3) which OS/server pair will serve the more hits per second, i.e.
make PHP perform better?
Did anybody ever do this? Could anybody make an educated guess about
what the winner would be, and for which reasons?
TIA,
Marco Fioretti
