I'm new to PHP but not to web-serving, hosting 3 webservers for a UK University project. The 3 servers are: NT (IIS4), MacOS (WebStar2) and LinuxPPC (Apache). I also run NT (Apache) on my development laptop. NT and Mac were just soooooo easy to set up, Linux was a pure pain, though its has a good support community, helping newbies getting started. I haven't use the Linux server for any serious hosting yet so I can't really comment on how duyrable it is. NT is solid (after 1 year, it has crashed 0 times) but because its MS it attracts all kinds of attacks from michievous hackers. The Mac, on the other hand, well, it is very easy to forget its there. We've been running the Mac the longest (6+years and although the platform is prone to crashing, its more due to using other apps on it rather than it acting as a server. I have to balance ease of setup and operation with all the other things I have to do as I am the sole tecchie on the project, and I'm not even a tecchie as the skills which got me the job in the first place were ddeply rooted in typesetting and DTP! I've migrated my skills over the years and now its almost all either business analysis or development, so I just want to forget about which platform is best and get on with it. Just my 2c.
