Very interesting Andy. Nice to see someone has done some performance tests,
and that php came out on top.
What was your MS SQL db?
Nice search facility, I like the way you reload the country list.
U have a bug/displaying of an error if it returns no results from the
search!

This has been asked many times on this list so I decided to dig out a
message from the archives.
I set a query to retrieve 2000 rows from a table, populate a web page and
display the results in a web browser.
Test one was an ASP page accessing a MS SQL table through ODBC. The page was
displayed in between 12 and 14 seconds, not too bad I thought.
Test two was also an ASP page but accessing MySQL directly without the
overhead of ODBC (which in my opinion is the easier choice to develop) the
page was displayed in around 4 seconds. I was absolutely amazed.
I decided to delve a little deeper so I ported the ASP page to PHP. Although
we are talking about a server that is only 5 metres away and is connected to
workstations via 100Mbit connections, the results as you can see are
unbelievable.
The PHP page connected to a MySQL table, displayed the full 2000 records in
2 seconds.
So now it`s up to you 14 seconds or 2 seconds, and as for reliability well,
it
s as good as the rest check out http://www.businessmeetings.com its a
web site
that we have just re-written. It was originaly written in ASP connected to
MS SQL but it`s now a PHP web connected to MySQL and is now much better.
Andy.
