Check out either fasttemplates (for PHP) or PHPLib's templates code.
I would go with PHPLib, as it is more likely the type of system that will be
integrated into PHP (that was said at some point by one of the lead
developers, I forget who specifically).
Also the PHPLib's implementation is faster, if I am not mistaken. Works
pretty well.
