Building a .a lib for Scintilla is one thing, bundling it in with
PHP-GTK is another, since you cannot guarantee that the .a will linger
around after the installation. I tried another strategy of using the
PHP_REQUIRE_CXX() macro and compiling the C++ files into the extension
itself, and with some extern "C" {} blocks - this mostly works - until I
hit a "_g_thread_init: symbol not found" error. This means we must also
link with Glib's threading library (scintilla states that it is
required). A third approach worth trying is to try and get Scintilla to
act nice and build a .so instead, so we no longer need to bundle the
Scintilla sources along and we simply do what we do in all other extensions.

Yes, the API must be stable across all platforms. However it is evident
that Scintilla on Linux is more of a hassle than GtkScintilla on
Windows; I was able to get a DLL for GtkScintilla on Windows with no
prior windows experience, while I have been trying to get Scintilla to
work on Linux for days.

Elizabeth has posted the link(s), your work on the installer will be
most appreciated!

I agree too, in fact I think it may be wise to make a release ASAP even
if it means we don't bundle Scintilla/GtkScintilla along with it...
Thoughts?
Steph, Where are you? :)
Cheers,
