Hi Stan,
You need to install an updated version of pkg-config. You can get this
via Macports too, although I must say that installing Gtk+ 2.8 via
Macports automatically installed an appropriate version of pkg-config
in my case.
Let us know the ouput of
pkg-config --version too.
