I've found ldconfig in the /sbin directory - but what do you mean by >"go back and make clean" ? Here's how you locate the mysqlclient library, which is necessary for compiling php with mysql. bash> locate mysqlclient /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.so.6.0.0 /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.so.6 /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.so /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.la /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.a /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.so.10.0.0 /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.so.10 Notice that the library is located in '/usr/local/lib/mysql'. You need to put that path in your /etc/ld.so.conf file. Login as root, open that file with your favorite editor (perhaps pico if you're getting started), and add that path. bash> pico /etc/ld.so.conf Your ld.so.conf file should look something like this: bash> cat /etc/ld.so.conf /usr/local/lib/mysql /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib /usr/local/lib /usr/lib Once you add that, you will have to tell ld.so that there's a new entry in its conf file. bash> /sbin/ldconfig Now go back to your php source and 'make clean'. bash> make clean At this point you're starting over. Run your ./configure and make and everything should work. In the meantime, pick up a book on linux or unix. Compiling source code isn't something a newbie to Linux jumps right into. Be patient and take it in little by little. You'll be speaking Linux-speak in no time. ;-) On Mon, 13 Nov 2000, Simon Garstin wrote: >Hi, > >please see my original query below. > >I am new to LINUX - and originally asked for help with a problem installing >PHP4. > >I got a fairly prompt, but to me largely unintelligible, response back - >which I have been trying to get clarified. > >This is now my third e-mail seeking clarification - I'm not asking much, >just for the recommended steps to be explained in plain English and not >"Linux-speak". > >Since the above e-mail address was offered to help out with problems - >please would someone have the courtesy to respond. > >regards > > >S.Garstin > > > >>Date: Thu, 09 Nov 2000 17:13:50 +0000 >>To: php-install@lists.php.net >>From: Simon Garstin <Sgarstin@tesco.net> >>Subject: Fwd: Re: [PHP-INST] Probs installing PHP >> >>Referring back to original e-mail address.....please help ! >> >>>Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 19:05:00 +0000 >>>To: julie@thickbook.com >>>From: Simon Garstin <Sgarstin@tesco.net> >>>Subject: Re: [PHP-INST] Probs installing PHP >>> >>>Julie, >>> >>>sorry you will have to explain a bit further ! >>> >>>1.
