Assuming the aim is to have everything _not_ enabled by default move to PECL, that's quite a big deal.
That's another topic and I tend to disagree (more later on that).
I'll wait... but I suspect all the arguments against that are based on PECL as it currently is, with all its distribution problems et al. - Steph
