It's faster.
DNS goes and looks up your IP address with remote DNS servers:
Say your IP is 1.2.3.4
it goes to the nameserver authoritative for 1.in-addr.arpa
and asks who is responsible for 2.1.in-addr.arpa
and then asks the auth for 2.1.in-addr.arpa who is...
up to 4.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa
instead, geoip queries a local file, just like the PHP website does when
reading user contributed notes, for instance. (and I assume that it's most
probably cached into memory, cause it's an apache module. it's also much
simpler to program as you have an HTTP variable that you can simply pull
by stating it's name in PHP, perhaps even directly in:
header("Location: http://$VARNAME.php.net");
don't you think? :)
