... yes and you don't depend on other servers. The only thing that scares me about this is that mirrors would be required to have it installed right? What happens if in the next six months I decide to have the mirror moved and I forget to move the GeoIP software? I don;t want to mess the mirror system. On the other hand it could be donde in such a way that all downloads would be managed by the central server, it would redirect everyone to the appropiate mirror based on a central GeoIP database. But I don't think that this is quite optimal (speaking load-wise of course). That's why maybe we should keep a DNS fallback, just in case. At 21:17 5/21/2002 +0300, you wrote:
It's faster. DNS goes and looks up your IP address with remote DNS servers: Say your IP is 1.2.3.4 it goes to the nameserver authoritative for 1.in-addr.arpa and asks who is responsible for 2.1.in-addr.arpa and then asks the auth for 2.1.in-addr.arpa who is... up to 4.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa instead, geoip queries a local file, just like the PHP website does when reading user contributed notes, for instance. (and I assume that it's most probably cached into memory, cause it's an apache module. it's also much simpler to program as you have an HTTP variable that you can simply pull by stating it's name in PHP, perhaps even directly in: header("Location: http://$VARNAME.php.net"); don't you think? :) On Tue, 21 May 2002, Gabor Hojtsy wrote:

Can this method cope in speed with DNS lookups? Goba -- Best regards,
