Hi!
As we have discussed at the php documentation meeting at linuxtag, the php website is going to use the livedocs[1] documentation presentation tool in the future, instead of the current pregenerated PHP files.
The sqlite requirement was added for this reason to the mirroring guidelines. Now I would like to propose some modifications, or in cases just shed some light on possible problems.
Suggestions:
- Remove htdig setup alltogether, ask mirrors having that set up
to remove this feature, as we are not using it, and we are not going
to use it. This also helps cleaning up the search.php code for now.
Note that livedocs has a built in search feature thanks to Ilia,
which will be expanded to support search in the website contents
too, so this will give instant search support on all mirrors which
will be able to show the manual (which is a basic requirement ;).
- Add "Options -Indexes" to the suggested Apache vhost setup, so
there will be no need to put index.php files into various places
around the php site (images, manual, backend, bin, etc.). The error
handler will then be capable of handling these kind of errors.
This would be nice, so there would be much less files to maintain,
and the URL handling code will be better integrated in the
errorhandler.
- Move the error handler to /error.php instead of /error/index.php,
for simplification. For BC resons, include the error file from
error/index.php until sites get in line with the new path.
- Suggest more possible stats solutions additionaly to webalizer.
There is already one mirror with ModLogAn set up, and one with
awstats, the others have webalizer (if any stats is set up).
This would help those whou would not like to compile webalizer,
but would be willing to set up someting easily (like awstats).
It would be nice to have a PHP log analizer, so we can put it
into our CVS and distribute it, so maintainers would only need
to add it to cron, but I don't kow of any such tool...
Question:
What is the PHP version requirement for livedocs? Do we need
some requirement on this for the PHP mirror sites? As far as I
know, PHP 4.2.x+ is needed for livedocs, which would not be
good for all current mirrors, as many have 4.1.x installed (our
current minimum requirement).
I would like to clean up the mirroring guidelines before asking mirror maintainers to update their setups. Doing more updates one time is easier than doing several small updates from time to time. With the above suggestions, the way would be cleared up for livedocs on the mirror sites.
Please express your feelings on these suggestions and the version requirement question!
