I think we here simply can say, PHP rocks, and it is the best.
You can get even more biased opinions if you ask these questions
on one of our mailing lists (in this case the php-general may be
good). There is also a good comparision of PHP and Java at the
Zend site: http://www.zend.com/
In PHP you can program really huge web applications. There were
some sessions at the PHP conference this November about this subject,
and also some PHP vs. Java. You may find some information about
this subjects by starting at the conference website:

Subject: Opinion on PHP
Hi webmaster,
The purpose of writing this email to you is not to reporting any bug or suggestion on the web
site, in fact, I hope this letter can be view by the php engine developer because I have some
questions.
I am a php/asp/java developer. Sincerely, I like php very much because the ease of coding and the
speed (Good Job!). But what I confused is
1. Is Java really better than php for a mid website?
2. Can php handle the website like Amazon, Yahoo (using Oracle/SQL Server)?
3. Can php beat WebSphere, SilverStream, WebLogic? (Not in term of development time, in term of
speed and stability, I currently develop on SilverStream, and I found it sucks!)
I read a lot of review on php by others, most of them said php is good for normal dynamic content
website. Hence I hope I can get the answer from you guys. :)
Currently I already some shopping-cart website, small CRM website for some company. But when come
to huge website (Internet/Intranet), all consultants prefer Java.
That's all for now, hope I can hear from you guy. Thanks.
regards,
vic
