OK, for the benefit of anyone else, I submitted a load of patches/bugs to
Greg about (specifically) the "makerpm" command which is currently part of
core PEAR. He suggested that we move it to a separate package,
PEAR_Command_Packaging, so that has been set up. Essentially it's just got
a straightforward fork of the "makerpm" command (only) in it. The plan is
that in future methods for other packaging formats (e.g. deb) might be
added if there was a demand for it.

Side by side with this I am working hard on getting PEAR stuff accepted
into Fedora (my particular distro of choice). As a proof-of-concept,
PEAR::DB was accepted last week into Fedora Extras. See also:
