Here are my feelings on the subjects that have come up:
Integration with RDBMS
I think that XML databases are sufficiently different from relational dbs
that integration with existing db abstractions would be difficult. And, I'm
not sure it would buy a user a lot. Having a db class abstract Oracle vs.
Mysql makes sense, since I can easily migrate my information from one to the
other via SQL statements. But I don't think anyone would move from DB2 to
Xindice or Tamino. The applications are simply too different, in my
opinion. And the reasons for using a relational db are pretty different
from the reasons for using an XML db.
Naming
Personally, I like XMLDB. I haven't seen XDB outside this discussion.
Implementation Abstractions
I think any PEAR class should aim to implement the XML:DB API. I realize
not everyone abides by the api currently, but my understanding of the space
is that the database maintainers are trying to migrate to that API. I think
it would be very interesting to switch my xml db from xindice to tamino to
berkeley db's xmldb without changing my PHP code. (Just as I can switch
from Oracle to MySQL now.)
As for the interfaces, I use http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpxindice/.
The currently available release doesn't work to well, but I modified it to
use PHP's internal xmlrpc implementation, and made it object-oriented.
Also, I have my own xmlrpc server that handles a bunch of request types that
are specific to my application. I've been meaning to clean up the code and
contribute it to the project, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Could you let us know ...please :-) ...that an integration
with abstraction layers of RDBMSs would make no sense? If you
share my opinion.
And where are these interfaces? I found some not really
well documented things on sourceforge, but they didn't work
for me.
