The biggest need for stream_select is the multiserver code.
Otherwise I have to foreach loop trying todo fgets on every server
connection.(after setting it to non-blocking mode)
That is absolutely horrible way todo it IMHO.
(even in a single connection.. having fgets() act as blocking for a single
line.. not cool at all).
Before finding the completely undocumented stream_select function(and buging
people in IRC about it -- it is getting documented soon), I was pondering
moving all of Net_IRC to use the Sockets extension.(so I could use
socket_select()) But by using fsockopen() and stream_select() in 4.3 I am
able to get the functionality I need for sanity and not require a non-standard
experimental extension, which I think is the lesser of two evils.
I hope that clears up some of my logic in requiring PHP 4.3.0+ for Net_IRC
