Hello,

Metabase is very good and well done, but it would be interesting to see if there is some common standard out there that can be used. A common language independant db schema solution would be very cool. You know I looked around a lot before inventing Metabase schema definition. There was simply nothing that satisfied the needs. Actually some things like sequences modelling were invented for Metabase. You may verify that neither for instance JDBC or ODBC provide sequence access and management. Anyway, Metabase schema definition is language independent. There are absolutely no dependencies on PHP there. As for standard formats that let you define database independent schemas, do not keep your hopes to high on this. The reason is that it does not interest database vendors that developers write truely portable database applications because that would untie their clients so they could switch the database they work with any time.
I think its at least worth investigation, specially if Lukas would be open looking at supporting the format with MDB.Schema management is divided in two parts: the manager and the database API. These are not tied to each other although they are shipped in the same package. So, nothing stops anybody from using Metabase/MDB API to implement the installation and management of a database schema using some other format besides Metabase XML format, using Metabase/MDB API. -- Regards, Manuel Lemos
