Well currently there is no roadmap.
At Linuxtag there will be a meeting regarding the future direction of
the database extensions. Hopefully the result will be that the database
packages will need to spend a lot less effort on unifying the different
API's and instead can focus on abstraction.
So this will undoubtly affect this roadmap if it is to be written.
At the same time I am currently in my R&D month and I am working on a
bunch of things in regards to MDB.
In the end I think the main thing that is holding things back is the
lack of drivers for MDB. This area is slowly improving but not at the
pace I was hoping.

PS: As long as the ext API's are not unified I think there will always
be people that want something lighter than MDB to do this work for them.
