I didn't say that the package will be removed. It will stay avaible,
just a change in it's description tag to say something like: "This
package is now part of the PEAR package and it's no longer maintained as
an standalone package" and add a dependency to say that
requires PEAR < version X.X (where X.X is the version with a shipped
Console Getopt).
The advantages of this change are:
1) The PEAR package will become self contained, this is, it won't need
other package to work. Now it's a little bit strange to install this
package before installing the installer.
2) Drop the task of maintaining a separate pacackage.xml and releasing
new versions at the web (nowadays the package at the web and the
pacakge installed by php or go-pear are different but have the same
version number which is clearly wrong).
3) Add extra features to the PEAR package.
4) The maintainers of the PEAR package will take care on maintaing the
Console_Getopt package.
5) People who want a class to handle cmd line arguments will install PEAR ;)
