http://www.pearfr.org/~amerz/ppm_new.zip contains a new filerole handler approach. Instead of hardcoding the fileroles in the installer it uses a class, which can be extended/replace depending on your needs. So you can define every file role you want. The only problem is currently, that this only works if you write your own install script. It would be more sophisticated, if you could register your handler class definied in package.xml. The archive contains also a new option for a configuration dir (the dir where the pear registry is stored) - in the offical distribution it is identical with the php_dir.
