If php4 has been installed through the ports system, everything is OK:
ll /usr/local/bin/phpize
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2058 27 aoû 23:32 /usr/local/bin/phpize

We cannot do that on FreeBSD, because phpize calls libtoolize, and we
don't have it! (we have libtoolize13 or libtoolize14 and things like
that).
The ports mechanism takes care of all these problems. E.g., I have just
built a port for APC. You can fetch it from
<http://pompo.net/ports/pear-APC.shar>.
It is still rough, but at least it builds fine.
