Roman, that's exactly my concern. For those who want to use the pear package
manager inhouse as a somehow generic installer to modularize their
application development, the current solution is too much bound to what the
PEAR project itself needs.
Concerning the future of PEAR, it would be a step forward to make the
installer more "open" concerning other ways/wishes to use it.
