Yeah the manual will never have the idiots guide focus .. so it would be great to have one separate (might be able to steal some from the manual though).
I disagree here. You don't want to have to maintain two manuals; getting people to write one set of docs is hard enough. If you're an experienced user, you can skip over all the hand-holding easily enough. Plus, if something does go wrong when you do it yourself, you can go back and check your steps.
Other than that, how about listing packages on Hotscripts et al? They get alot of traffic and are popular with many PHP coders.
Yeah I think we once had the topic of doing automatic submissions to such sites. Not sure if we really need this or if this deludes the whole PEAR thing. I mean if we manage to be the first site people check we might hurt outselves if people can also go to hotscripts to get the same information. They will stick to their habit of checking hotscripts instead of changing their habit to first check PEAR.
A lot of PHP developers have no idea what kind of stuff PEAR contains (or they'd all be using it ;)). I, for one, only discovered PEAR because I saw "--with-pear" in my host's phpinfo() and was curious. Then I found all kinds of cool packages and got hooked. :) I think we should submit packages to places like Hotscripts. You can force people to visit the PEAR site to download the packages. Maybe we could even add a feature to pearweb like http://pear.php.net/package/MDB?ref=hotscripts that displays a message at the top to people who come from outside code databases. -- Marshall Roch
