Looks cool. As Toby said, you should use the OLE package -- I doubt it would
be problematic to change. As for pearifying things, you will also need to
change some constant names to avoid conflict and if possible avoid globals.
If you must use them, then you will need to rename them.
Any chance that it could auto recognize the encoding (I suppose that would
be possible)?
It's also currently GPL. You'll need to change it to LGPL or some other pear
compatible license.
All in all, it looks quite nifty.
