Hi,
Any package that uses get_class() to check on the type of object (this includes PEAR) is broken in HEAD of PHP 5, simply because all PEAR classes have upper-case in them. All calls to get_class() must be wrapped in strtolower() to work in both php 4 and php 5.
This will not be changing, simply because DOM and other extensions need a case-sensitive get_class(), and it's a good idea. It's too bad it wasn't included in 4.x
This means that literally no package in PEAR will work in both PHP 5 and PHP 4 that uses PEAR::isError(), until a PEAR release with the fix is rolled.
There are two solutions:
1) update every package and force a new release
2) get PEAR 1.3 out the door, add channels to PEAR core, and get 1.4 out the door before PHP 5 goes stable, and have a separate channel for any package release that is verified to be compatible with PHP 5.
It would be good to do #1 no matter what.
Regards,
Greg
