I had no trouble compiling PHP with multibyte support. I've tested on x86
FreeBSD 4.4.
I have seen the bug report at bugs.php.net but I've had no Apache crash yet
for about 3 months.
Maybe it was OS specific bug or mis-configuration(php.ini needs not much
intuitive addtional configurations).
I am not sure about RPMs because I am FreeBSD person.

I heavily and only use PostgreSQL.
I am satisfied with its multi-byte support.
