Had the same problem running PHP / PEAR on a Debian-system. Haven't
yet figured out why it's like that. Please try one thing:
pear package --nocompress
and see if that works without problems for you. Would be quite
interesting to know. As a quickfix you can package the resulting tar-
archive manually to get your usual .tgz. But as said: Only a quick-
fix. I suspect the problem is the zlib shipped with Debian, although
I can't proof it :-(
If anybody got an idea I'd be happy to know. Regards
