RE: "On PEAR quality issues and natural selection"
Since some of the issues related to documentation and other feature
integrations seem to lack organization and delegation, let me propose
this solution:
I think in the interest of organization and the evolvement of PEAR
that a new feature in PEAR-WEB where the PEAR-WEB folks can post
projects that need attention seems fitting, like PEPr. A simple
message-board like tool where I need help on this or that can be
posted. Such as docs or this or that widget for the website.
PEAR members can browse what needs done and commit themselves to
either assisting on or completing the task.
I think that such a tool would inspire more involvement, get more
done as a whole, and prevent stagnation. It seems that there are
alot of ideas that come through PEAR-DEV and other channels but
no centralized, concrete place to keep track of them all. How can
someone help if they don't know what needs done?
Such a tool would involve posting a project, then those interested
in helping either commiting help or posting the needed work, code,
docs, etc, there in the same forum and then someone else who
understands CVS and has CVS access commiting to CVS. I say forum
for lack of a better word, task manager seems more fitting.
I would even be willing to write the necessary code, given
someone could point me in the right direction for how the code
needs to be structured for implementation in the site, as I have
no idea of how the internals of PEAR are set-up.
Such a solution would also, IMO, releive some of the burden from the
same few people having to do all the work and result in a better
PEAR.
If I am naive and such a feature already exists, perhaps a link to
it under the "Developers" heading? I don't think the mailing lists
are very good for this, as good ideas are often lost and forgotten
about.
