That's for sure, it looks like people using docbook think they are clever guys. Actually, docbook is not only XML as you tend to think it is. It is also difficult to install because not very compatible, it takes a lot of disk space, it doesn't install in standard places and the version used by PEARDOC is custom and incomplete, so it is difficult to find. I spent 2 days trying to get this to work, I won't waste more time on it.
This is probably the crux of the problem with docbook - (albiet wyswyig editors would also be nice). - This should be solved by livedocs (eg. apart from the current xlstproc requirement it should be a pretty clean PHP only solution) Actually editing the document is not that complex.. - If you have to learn any of OO/HTML/Rest/BB markup/Wiki markup/styles.. - it's not any more or less difficult than any of these.. (especially as there are already a large pool of examples in CVS now to copy and paste from...
Actually, Subversion would be better for this job, if only we had a Subversion extension in PHP. All it could take is Subversion + reST + PHPDocumentor + reST->PEAR.
However much I love Subversion, (espeically for revision controlled filesystems), I am still very wary of the design issue that stores the whole repository in 1 file.. - I've lost at least 3 repositories (thankfully backups saved me). due to that design decission - not to speak of aborted work, due to the fact it exceeded the 2Gb file limit on a clients machine.. I'd stick to CVS for a slightly lower maintenance, group managed project... Regards Alan -- Can you help out? Need Consulting Services or Know of a Job? http://www.akbkhome.com
