+1 for a big announce at its package home and three months later hide it at the web (will need a deprecated flag or something like so implemented). CVS code, ideally should be moved out the main PEAR tree
for avoiding any confusion.
As general rule, I'd propose that all abandoned packages with a healthy competitive package should follow the same fate.
